Library - 5th Grade

The library program fosters a love of reading, supports the school’s curriculum, and promotes curiosity and critical thinking.  Fifth graders have a weekly library class, which includes storytelling, read-aloud, book talks, research and other learning activities, and time to choose and borrow books.

Units of Study

• Review and expand on K-4 skills
• Identify main ideas and important details from non-fiction text
• Differentiate between narrative, expository, and persuasive writing.
• Learn to identify bias of author/source
• Distinguish between advertising and news/facts
• Draw evidence from primary sources
• Learn note-taking methods
• Learn to cite sources (title, author, source, location, date)
• Visual literacy: interpret information from charts, graphs, diagrams
