Library - 1st Grade

The mission of the library program is to promote literacy, foster a love of reading, support the school’s curriculum, and create a place where inquisitive young minds feel welcome to explore. First graders have a weekly library class, which includes storytelling, read-aloud, learning activities, and time to choose and borrow books.

Units of Study

• Review and expand on Kindergarten skills
• Introduce concept of call number for location of books in the library
• Introduce organization of fiction books alphabetically by author’s surname
• Introduce the Dewey Decimal System of library organization
• Introduce use of online library catalog to select materials
• Introduce use of table of contents, index, and guide words
• Introduce different types of reference works (encyclopedia, atlas, dictionary, thesaurus, almanac, online database)
• Fairytales, Folktales, Trickster tales, Mythology
• Compare and contrast different versions of the same fairytale or folktale
• Visual literacy (compare and contrast illustrations, infer facts from photographs)
• Use eBooks
